When pursuing double bass at CIM, students will study under Scott Dixon or Derek Zadinsky, members of The Cleveland Orchestra, and explore a blend of solo and orchestral bass playing. Studies at CIM will prepare musicians to excel as a contemporary professional bassist.

CIM double bass students participate in weekly private lessons and master classes conducted by international soloists. Students also have opportunities to take the stage and perform in solo recitals, orchestra concerts at Severance Hall and new music or chamber ensembles.

To prepare for professional orchestra auditions, students participate in CIM’s bass repertoire class. CIM’s small studio size creates a mutually supportive atmosphere for high-level bass playing.

Why Choose Double Bass at CIM

  • Students perform in orchestra concerts with high-profile guest conductors, such as Robert Spano and JoAnn Falletta.
  • CIM’s partnership with the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Department of Music opens up opportunities for students to perform in their Baroque Orchestra, which is coached by internationally esteemed specialists.
  • Students will become familiar with orchestral excerpts for double bass quartet and learn chamber music skills like leading, accompanying, matching and communicating
