Composition and voice students take high honors at national and state competitions

Cleveland Institute of Music sophomore Andrew Stock (Keith Fitch) was one of ten composers from around the country selected for the LA Phil’s National Composers Intensive, Next on Grand New Music Festival in May. Stock’s great achievement comes at the heels of several CIM voice students earning top honors at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Buckeye Chapter Student Auditions, held earlier this month.

Stock’s win earns him the chance to write a new work for the LA-based new music ensemble wild Up, which will be rehearsed and refined during the festival. Selected commissioned works will be performed publically and wild Up will record all of the commissioned works for the composers. As part of this fully-funded competition, Stock will also attend LA Phil concerts, observe rehearsals and have the opportunity to work individually with guest composers in master classes.

This April, in Columbus, Ohio, several CIM voice students participated in the NATS Student Auditions. The following students won prizes in their divisions:

Cat. VIII: Junior Women

1st Naomi Duerr (Mary Schiller)

2nd Halla Kalmansson (Mary Schiller)

Cat. X-A: Advanced College Women

1st Angela Kaso (Dean Southern)

2nd Erika Rodden (Dean Southern)

Cat. XI: Advanced College Men
