School's out for the summer but the music goes on at CIM

School's out for the summer but the music goes on at CIM

Just because the academic year has concluded at the Cleveland Institute of Music doesn't mean everything's quiet.

This summer, we've got some special guests coming to our halls -- beginning with the Ariel String Quartet and Tomer Gewirtzman on Thursday, May 29.

Thursday, May 29 at 7:30pm in Mixon Hall

Tomer Gewirtzman, piano

Award-winning Israeli musicians the Ariel String Quartet and pianist Tomer Gewirtzman come together for a night of Bach, Bloch, Beethoven and Schumann.

Presented by  America-Israel Cultural Foundation, The Jewish Federation’s Cleveland Israel Arts Connection and CIM, the concert will feature a special performance of “Baal Shem Suite,” which was composed by CIM’s first musical director Ernest Bloch and will be played on a violin once owned and played by the composer.

Friday, May 30-Sunday, June 1 at CIM

Jason Vieaux, guitar

Then, beginning Friday, May 30, Guitars International, in cooperation with CIM, presents the 14th Annual Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival. As in years past, the festival will include a classical guitar exhibition, lectures and master classes, which are free and open to the public as well as ticketed recitals ($22).

Some of this year's performers and speakers will include:

  • Jason Vieaux (guitar) with Julien Labro (bandoneón)
  • Petra Polácková, Robert Gruca, Brad DeRoche and Krystin O'Mara (guitar)
  • SoloDuo - Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli (guitar)
  • Nigel North (lute) with Carrie Henneman Shaw (soprano)
  • Jeffrey R. Elliott and Cyndy Burton (luthiers)

Saturday, June 7 -- A Special Event

Julien Labro, accordion and bandoneon

The head of CIM's collaborative piano department takes the music "on the road," teaming up with guest artist Julien Labro (accordion/bandoneón) for Time to Tango, presented by the Women's Committee of CIM at the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club in South Euclid.

The benefit event includes cocktails, dinner and a concert by the duo, who will perform tango music. The bandoneón, which Labro will be playing, is an essential instrument in most tango ensembles and is widely considered a symbol and sound of the tango.

For reservations, call 216.795.3209 (weekdays, 9am-5pm); RSVP no later May 28, 2014.
