World Premiere Event April 23
International piano sensation Daniil Trifonov will premiere his first concerto April 23 with the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra conducted by CIM President Joel Smirnoff in CIM's Kulas Hall.
Trifonov's historic world premiere comes in a year of extraordinary performances by this Russian-born pianist, including more than 120 concerts worldwide. In 2013 Trifonov earned his Artist's Certificate at CIM, where he continues to study with renowned pianist and pedagogue, Sergei Babayan. In January 2014 his debut solo CD, Trifonov: The Carnegie Recital, was released in the U.S. under the Deutsche Grammophon label.
For this benefit concert, CIM commissioned Trifonov's work, "Piano Concerto in E-flat minor," as a cornerstone of the CIM's Year of the Composer/Virtuoso, a commitment to focusing the 21st century conservatory on building the next repertoire.
This premiere and the introduction of CIM’s new Composer/Virtuoso program revives the great tradition of the performer/composer in the manner of Bartók, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Bernstein. These musical artists spent their lives composing and performing their own works, building their generation’s repertoire based on the essential connection between audience and artist.
Trifonov's connections with audiences through his electric performances and soulful artistry have impressed music lovers and critics throughout the world. He has been reviewed by The Guardian as "technically fearless and with a musical temperament to match," hailed by The Washington Post as "a major artist in the making" and reviewed by the New York Times for a performance that was "jaw dropping and explosively colorful."
All proceeds from this benefit concert support student scholarships through the CIM Annual Fund.
