CLEVELAND, OHIO – The fall semester at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) is near completion, but before the weather delivers a flurry of snowflakes, musicians present a flurry of concert events. Faculty, students and prestigious guest artists present a wide variety of performances to please any musical taste.

The Cleveland Institute of Music presents hundreds of events each year, most of which are free of charge. Programs are performed at 11021 East Boulevard, Cleveland, unless otherwise noted. Peter and the Wolf Added to Holiday CircleFest

Sunday, December 2

CIM is pleased to participate again in University Circle's seasonal festival--Holiday CircleFest.

On Sunday, December 2, University Circle institutions present family-friendly events featuring music, shopping, food, exhibits and, of course, lots of holiday cheer.

Bundle up and walk the Circle to explore and enjoy the various activities or hop on the trolley, stopping off at East Boulevard and Hazel Drive to take in the sounds of the season at CIM and enjoy festive happenings at our neighbor's place--the Western Reserve Historical Society.

CIM's seasonal offerings will include a variety of musical programs featuring talented musicians from both Conservatory and Preparatory divisions, including the always-adorable Suzuki students. The CIM Harp Ensemble will perform its popular program of excerpts from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite" in Mixon Hall at 1 p.m. with a special guest ballerina. This year, the CIM Orchestra will add Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" to the festive holiday music mix at 1:45 p.m.. CIM carolers will bring in the holiday spirit and our "Yuleing Tubas" add some hefty holiday cheer, as well.

After the circle-wide festivities conclude, guests are encouraged to head back to CIM for the Intensive String Quartet Seminar Gala Concert, "Magical Mendelssohn," at 6 p.m. The concert features the six complete quartets of Felix Mendelssohn and the finale of his octet. (See cim.edu for details.)

Chamber Music Festival

11/26 Mon. – 12/7 Fri.

CIM, in collaboration with the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, presents 2012’s Winter Chamber Music Festival. Concerts featuring strings, piano/strings, brass, woodwind and percussion chamber music are performed by CIM students, faculty and guest artists – this season, the Juilliard String Quartet. Here are just a few highlights.

The Juilliard String Quartet presents a master class at CIM on Monday, December 3 at 7 p.m. The following evening, Tuesday, December 4, they will perform in concert at Plymouth Congregational Church in Shaker Heights. This event is a collaboration with the Cleveland Chamber Music Society and features works by Beethoven. Tickets are $30, with discounts available for seniors and students. As part of the festival, students perform in end-of-semester ensemble concerts in early December. Richard Stout coaches Brass Ensembles in Kulas December 3 (8 p.m.); Elizabeth Camus coaches Woodwind Ensembles December 4 (7:30 p.m.); new faculty member Sharon Robinson coaches the Advanced Piano Trio Program December 6 in Mixon (December 6). Students in CIM’s Young Artist Program conclude the semester on December 7 at 7:30 p.m. with an event at Chagrin Falls United Methodist Church. Freewill offering accepted. Set the Night to Music with Roberta Flack

The Women's Committee of CIM will "Set the Night to Music" when it hosts legendary singer Roberta Flack in a benefit concert with the CIM Orchestra at Severance Hall on January 26.

Internationally acclaimed as one of the greatest songstresses of our time, Grammy Award-winning Roberta Flack remains unparalleled in her ability to tell a story through her music. Her songs, effortlessly traversing a broad musical landscape from pop to soul to folk to jazz, include Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, Killing Me Softly With His Song and of course, Set the Night to Music.

Black Heritage Concert

Students from the Cleveland School of the Arts return to CIM’s Kulas Hall for a community favorite, the Black Heritage Concert, celebrating its 22nd year on Sunday, January 27 at 4 p.m. Director William B. Woods leads the R. Nathaniel Dett Concert Choir and Intermediate Concert Choir with Jazz Art ensemble. Woods, a co-conductor in last year’s “Community Celebration” with CIM at Severance Hall, holds an honorary doctorate from the institute.

This event will conclude CIM’s #GivingTuesday campaign, which puts the GIVING back into the “giving season.” The eight-week campaign launches on Tuesday, November 27 and supports the next generation of classical musicians training at the Cleveland School of the Arts (part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District). CIM staff, faculty and students regularly teach, coach and mentor the young musicians at CSA and see firsthand the value of arts education, as well as the challenges CSA faces with funding and supplies. CIM has coordinated efforts to provide much-needed musical instruments, accessories, books, lessons and more to the school and its students.

CIM will present the collection of items to CSA at the Black Heritage concert.

Faculty and Members of the Cleveland Orchestra Perform in Free Chamber Recitals

In addition to the New Music faculty recital December 5 (part of the Winter Chamber Music Festival, featuring works by CIM's own Keith Fitch and Steven Mark Kohn), CIM faculty musicians perform in several concerts sure to beat the winter blues.

 

On Wednesday, January 16, Annie Fullard (violin), Jeffrey Irvine (viola), Sergei Babayan (piano) and Bryan Dumm (cello) will present works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Schumann. They will be joined by a second violinist, to be determined. Seating passes are required for this event.

Baritone Dean Southern performs with the CIM Orchestra in Kulas Hall, guest conducted by Michael Adelson on Wednesday, January 23 at 8 p.m. The event celebrates the centenary of the birth of Witold LutosŁawski.

Soprano Kathryn Brown and pianist Sergei Babayan perform works by Wolf, Mahler, Duparc, Tchaikovsky and Obradors on Wednesday, January 30.
