CIM Announces November Events

 

Violinist Midori, Opera Buffa, New Music at MOCA, the Winter Chamber Music Festival and more

 

CLEVELAND, OHIO – 10-23-12 The Cleveland Institute of Music’s fall season is in full swing. As the seasons change, the concert events provide as much variety as the colors in the autumn foliage. Acclaimed violinist Midori performs in the second event of the Mixon Hall Masters Series, the Opera Theater presents a comic masterpiece and the Winter Chamber Music Festival begins.

The Cleveland Institute of Music presents hundreds of events each year, most of which are free of charge. Programs are performed at 11021 East Boulevard, Cleveland, unless otherwise noted. MIXON HALL MASTERS SERIES | RECITAL

 

Midori, violin

November 5 at 8 p.m.

The series that has charmed both audiences and artists returns to CIM with three concerts this season, featuring world-renowned musicians in what has quickly become known as one of the finest acoustical and visually elegant halls in the world. Guest artists for 2012-2013 bring more than musical experience – they also bring a lifelong dedication to the next generation of classical music performers and audiences.

Violinist Midori performs on November 5 with pianist Özgür Aydin. Midori is known equally for the scope of her dazzling 29-year career as a performer and recording artist as she is for her innovative and extensive world-wide community engagement initiatives.

As part of her appearance on the Mixon Hall Masters Series, she will present a master class on Tuesday, November 6 at 9:30 a.m. The class is presented at no charge and is open to the public.

OPERA THEATER

 

Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto

November 7 -10

The CIM Opera Theater presents Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage). Directed by David Bamberger, with the CIM Orchestra conducted by Harry Davidson, the production runs November 7-10 at 7:30 p.m. in Kulas Hall.

When Domenico Cimarosa’s joyously comic Il matrimonio segreto premiered in Vienna in 1792, the Emperor was so delighted by the work that he invited the whole cast to supper…and then asked them to perform the entire opera all over again. It is believed to be the only time in operatic history that an entire work has been the encore!

This masterpiece has continued to delight audiences ever since. Its story deals with a rich merchant who is trying to arrange marriages for his daughters, unaware that the younger one, Carolina, has secretly married his bookkeeper. When a titled count arrives to conclude the arranged marriage with the older daughter, Elisetta, he instantly falls in love with Carolina. Secrets, confusion and misunderstandings occur, and hilarity ensues – all set to an effervescent score.

NEW MUSIC SEASON BEGINS

 

November 10, 11 & 15

Celebrate the wide spectrum of music that forges new paths while embracing the tradition of the classics with the New Music Series, directed by CIM’s Head of Composition Keith Fitch.

The season begins with a visit by one of today's most successful young composers, Sean Shepherd, in Symposium on November 10 discussing his music and approach to composition. Mr. Shepherd will be a guest with the New Music Ensemble at CIM on November 11, in a program featuring his works, and works by Fitch and Fox.

A portion of this program will be repeated during the fourth year of CIM’s dynamic series at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA) on November 15. CIM helped MOCA celebrate the grand opening of its new University Circle location earlier this fall. CIM@MOCA Harmonic Hues events are presented at no charge but tickets are required. Chamber Music Festival

 

11/26 Mon. – 12/4 Tues.

CIM, in collaboration with the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, presents 2012’s Winter Chamber Music Festival. Concerts featuring strings, piano/strings, brass, woodwind and percussion chamber music are performed by CIM students, faculty and guest artists – this season, the Juilliard String Quartet (in December). Here are just a few highlights.

On November 29, the Chamber Music Marathon begins at 6:30 p.m. Students perform in trios, quartets and quintets in various locations simultaneously. Refreshments are available during breaks. This is a fabulous chance for audiences to create their own unique program of favorite works and celebrate with an evening of live chamber music. On November 30 at 8 p.m., the Cavani Quartet continues their new series, “Breaking Boundaries with Bartók.” They will be joined by guest artist violist Roger Tapping. Presented over two seasons, concerts in this series feature a quartet composed by Béla Bartók, paired with works by other composers that similarly reflect Bartok’s use of folk music as a compositional device. This event is presented at no charge, but seating passes are required.
