Cleveland Institute of Music Announces 2013-14 Concert Season
CLEVELAND, OHIO (08-29-13) The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) announced it's 2013-14 Concert Season, which and it promises to be one of the most exciting, innovative and full so far. This season is billed as the Year of the Composer/Virtuoso, rounding out the definition of the complete musician: the artist who understands community, hears culture in its diversity and creates new music based on that inspiration. CIM's own composer/virtuoso and winner of the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition Daniil Trifonov premieres his new work this spring.
Although the robust season has a theme, it also includes classic favorites, such as the beloved opera theater, more than two dozen faculty recitals by world-renowned musicians, and orchestra performances both at CIM and Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra.

MIXON HALL MASTERS SERIES: RETURN OF THE COMPOSER/VIRTUOSO
This season's Mixon Hall Masters Series celebrates the Year of the Composer/Virtuoso by featuring innovative musicians whose distinctive compositions and world-renowned performances redefine the modern classical music experience.
Composer/pianists Lera Auerbach and Gabriela Montero and composer/vocal artist Meredith Monk will all perform standard classical music in novel ways, while introducing audiences to new repertoire through their own compositions and unique instrumentation.
Tickets for the Mixon Hall Masters Series at CIM are $28 and $40. Purchase tickets to all three events and receive a 20% discount. Call the CIM Box Office at 216.795.3211.
As part of this series, each performer presents a master class that is free and open to the public.

Mark O'Connor and the O'Connor String Quartet are co-presented by CIM and the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the Mixon Hall Masters Series: Return of the Composer/Virtuoso and the CMA Performing Arts Series: Masters of the Violin. The recital will be held at CMA's Gartner Auditorium. Tickets for the O'Connor String Quartet range from $33 through $51. DANIIL TRIFONOV WORLD PREMIERE
On the heels of winning the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition and the 13th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, pianist Daniil Trifonov made his CIM professional debut in November 2011. Not only was he the youngest artist to perform in CIM's Mixon Hall Masters Series at the age of 20, he is the only musician to do so while still attending CIM. Balancing study with a rigorous touring schedule, Mr. Trifonov earned his Artist Certificate from CIM in 2013 and continues his studies with Sergei Babayan in CIM's Artist Diploma program.
This season, he takes the stage at CIM for another unprecedented debut, performing a benefit concert for the institution that helped shape him into a composer/virtuoso. The CIM Orchestra will premiere one of his original works.

ORCHESTRA@SEVERANCE
Young musicians aspire to perform in the greatest concert halls in world. As students at CIM, they're given that very opportunity, multiple times, during their academic careers.
The CIM Orchestra performs in the elegant Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, five times this concert season during the CIM@Severance series. Each of these special performances features a student, guest artist or faculty member as a soloist, and provides students the opportunity to perform on the same stage of their mentors and teachers.

BIENNIAL CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY
In the spirit of community collaboration, CIM will host a joint concert, inviting musicians from the Cleveland School of the Arts (CSA), Antioch Baptist Church Choirs and the Singers' Club of Cleveland to join the CIM Orchestra on Severance Hall's magnificent stage. President Joel Smirnoff conducts the March 28 event.
This is the second such celebratory concert for the CIM Orchestra, showcasing a commitment to community and paying homage to CIM's special relationship with CSA, where CIM students and faculty teach. In April 2012, every inch of the Severance Hall stage was filled when more than 350 people performed Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2 in C minor, "Resurrection."

OPERA THEATER: THE MAGIC FLUTE RETURNS
"The CIM Opera Theater is reveling in the work these days....conjuring the whimsical and ominous worlds that help put the opera in a class of its own," according to critics. Audiences will have three chances to see and hear for themselves this season.
Under the artistic direction of David Bamberger, with the CIM Orchestra conducted by Harry Davidson, the Opera Theater's season presents two fully staged and costumed productions.

NEW MUSIC SERIES INCLUDES TWO SPECIAL COLLABORATIONS
Celebrate the diverse spectrum of music that forges new paths while embracing the traditions of the classics in the New Music Series, directed by Keith Fitch (head, composition).
Discover the next generation of composers at composition department recitals featuring innovative new works November 24, March 2 and April 27.
Take in a symposium by renowned guest composers such as Robert Dick (October 5), Joan Tower (November 9), Bernard Rands (January 27) and Chen Yi (April 5). The New Music Ensemble will perform works by these guest composers on November 10, January 29 and April 6.
Enjoy the juxtaposition of new music and modern art at CIM+MOCA on March 20. This season's special event, SUDDENLY IT'S EVENING, is inspired by the art of "giving up the ghost." Each work reflects the composer's experience with death, providing a fitting counterpoint to MOCA's exhibition Dirge. Tickets are free for MOCA members and just $8 for non-members. A unique collaboration between CIM, the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History returns for 360 ᵒ of Sight + Sound. FACULTY RECITAL SERIES
The Faculty Recital series includes more than two dozen solo artist and chamber music performances. These inspiring concerts are presented at no charge and feature CIM's world-renowned faculty. Many faculty and guest artists are members of The Cleveland Orchestra. In fact, more than half of the members of The Cleveland Orchestra are connected to CIM as faculty, alumni or both.
