CIM Announces 2012-13 Concert Season
The Incredible Roberta Flack, Rising Star Chad Hoopes, Mixon Hall Masters Series Highlight CIM's upcoming Season.
CLEVELAND, OHIO - Explore. Experience. Create. That's the challenge the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) has presented to performers and audiences as it announces its 92nd concert season. CIM's unsurpassed faculty and alumni (including more than half of The Cleveland Orchestra), extraordinary students and renowned guest artists will help audiences experience a culture of creativity with hundreds of concerts - most presented at no charge.
This season, the Women's Committee of CIM hosts the legendary songstress Roberta Flack in performance with the CIM Orchestra at Severance in a large-scale benefit concert, as well as President Smirnoff and rising star Chad Hoopes in a smaller benefit this fall. The Orchestra performs in four additional concerts during the CIM@Severance series. The concert season also includes the fifth year of the Mixon Hall Master Series, fabulous productions by the Opera Theater and the New Music Ensemble welcomes the Museum of Contemporary Art to University Circle with performances in MOCA's brand new building.

ROBERTA FLACK PERFORMS BENEFIT FOR CIM

The Women's Committee of CIM will "Set the Night to Music" when it hosts legendary singer Roberta Flack in a benefit concert with the CIM Orchestra at Severance Hall on January 26. Internationally acclaimed as one of the greatest songstresses of our time, GRAMMY award-winning Roberta Flack remains unparalleled in her ability to tell a story through her music. Her songs, effortlessly traversing a broad musical landscape from pop to soul to folk to jazz include Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, Killing Me Softly With His Song and of course, Set the Night to Music.

SPECIAL EVENT FEATURING RISING STAR CHAD HOOPES AND PRESIDENT JOEL SMIRNOFF
September 7
The Women's Committee of CIM is pleased to present "Catch a Rising Star" featuring 17-year-old violin rising star Chad Hoopes in performance with his mentor, President Joel Smirnoff on September 7.
Like many children, Chad Hoopes started taking violin lessons at an early age. But it soon became apparent that the young artist had a gift. By the age of 12, he was performing with internationally renowned symphony orchestras. A recent Artist-in-Residence at Classical Minnesota Public Radio, Hoopes is represented worldwide by Tanja Dorn at IMG Artists.
"Star" is also a word used to describe Joel Smirnoff, who performed as first violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet for 23 years. In addition to his presidential role, he is also a recording artist, composer, conductor, GRAMMY Award-winner, pedagogue and writer.

SPECIAL EVENT FEATURING TRIFONOV AND BABAYAN
September 16
On Sunday, September 16 Cleveland audiences will have a rare treat. International Tchaikovsky Competition Grand Prix winner pianist Daniil Trifonov will perform with his teacher and mentor, critically acclaimed Sergei Babayan, in Kulas Hall.
Mr. Trifonov's career skyrocketed after winning a series of internationally prestigious competitions. His fast rise to fame, handled both modestly and gracefully by the young pianist, landed him a spot on last year's Mixon Hall Masters Series - making him the youngest performer on the series and marking the first time a CIM student performed as a Master.

MIXON HALL MASTERS SERIES
The series that has charmed both audiences and artists returns to CIM with three concerts this season, featuring world-renowned musicians in what has quickly become known as one of the finest acoustical and visually elegant halls in the world. Guest artists for 2012-2013 bring more than musical experience - they also bring a lifelong dedication to the next generation of classical music performers and audiences.

October 17, CIM audiences can CIM audiences can meet new faculty members Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson when the series opens, along with the third in their trio, Joseph Kalischstein. Read more about the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio.
As part of his appearance on the series, Joseph Kalichstein, who is on the faculty at Juilliard, will conduct a piano chamber music master class on Thursday, October 18 at 9 a.m. The class is open to the public and presented at no charge.
Violinist Midori performs on November 5 with pianist Özgür Aydin. Midori is known equally for the scope of her dazzling 29-year career as a performer and recording artist as she is for her innovative and extensive world-wide community engagement initiatives.
As part of her appearance on the Mixon Hall Masters Series, she will present a master class on Tuesday, November 6 at 9:30 a.m. The class is presented at no charge and is open to the public.
In the spring, Grammy Award winning soprano Christine Brewer takes the stage. Thursday, March 7, she'll perform works by Wagner, Straus and American songs of Alan Smith, Harold Arlen and Amy Beach. She will be accompanied by Craig Terry. Ms. Brewer presents a master class on Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m.

CIM OPERA THEATER PRESENTS COMIC MASTERPIECE
"The CIM Opera Theater is reveling in the work these days....conjuring the whimsical and ominous worlds that help put the opera in a class of its own," according to critics. Audiences will have three chances to see and hear for themselves this season.
Under the artistic direction of David Bamberger, with the CIM Orchestra conducted by Harry Davidson, the Opera Theater's season presents two fully staged and costumed productions.
All CIM Opera Theater productions feature projected translations so that audiences stay in on the action. Tickets for each production are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $12 for groups of 10 or more and $10 for students. Call 216.795.3211 or buy online at cim.edu.
November 7 through November 10, CIM presents Domenico Cimarosa's comic masterpiece Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage). This work is the key link in Italian opera buffa between Pergolesi's La serva padrona (which initiated the style) and the great comedies of Rossini. Other than the operas of Mozart, it is the only work of this period still regularly performed. Verdi regarded it as the ideal opera buffa. According to tradition, the Emperor Leopold II was so delighted by the world premiere that he invited the cast to supper -- and then required a second performance of the entire opera. This was the longest encore in history! Opening night performance presented in honor of The Giant Eagle Foundation.
The second opera begins February 27 and lasts through March 2. The opening night performance will be presented in honor of The Lubrizol Foundation. The production will be announced this winter. Visit cim.edu for more information.
The season concludes with the ever popular program of fully-costumed Spring Scenes April 19 through 21 accompanied by music director John Simmons. April 21 is the only matinee performance of the opera season.

CIM@SEVERANCE
Student musicians aspire to perform in the greatest concert halls in world. As students at CIM, they're given that very opportunity - multiple times -- during their academic careers. The CIM Orchestra performs in the elegant Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, four times this concert season during the series. Each of these special performances will feature an award-winning student soloist or other renowned guest artist and provide students the opportunity to perform on the same stage of their mentors and teachers. On Wednesday, September 12, the Orchestra celebrates CIM with a rousing season opener in Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture. Violist Rimbo Wong, performing Ernest Bloch's Suite for Viola and Orchestra, pays homage to CIM's heritage and former leader. Witness the virtuosic flair and impeccable technique of the CIM Orchestra as they present Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra. This event is presented in honor of Barbara and A. Malachi Mixon, III and the Invacare Corporation.
October 10
Take a journey with Carl Topilow and the Orchestra on Wednesday, October 10, as they perform the sea-inspired Hebrides Overture by Felix Mendelssohn. Next stop is New York City, where Czech born Antonín Dvořák composed the popular and magnificent Concerto in B minor, to be performed by cellist Andris Koh. Finally, enjoy a timeless mix of Russian paganism and Parisian inspiration as the Orchestra offers up Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. This event is presented in honor of the KeyBank Foundation.
Save the dates for spring semester events in the CIM@Severance series, repertoire to be announced this winter. Carl Topilow conducts on Wednesday March 27. New faculty members and Mixon Hall Masters Series artists Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson, with the third in their Trio, Joseph Kalichstein, join the Orchestra in a performance of works by Beethoven. This April 17 performance is made possible through the generosity of Joe and Ellen Thomas.

NEW MUSIC SERIES PRESENTS GUEST COMPOSERS SEAN SHEPHERD AND SHULAMIT RAN, CONTINUES COLLABORATION AT MOCA'S NEW LOCATION
Celebrate the wide spectrum of music that forges new paths while embracing the tradition of the classics with the New Music Series, directed by CIM's Head of Composition Keith Fitch.
Tomorrow's great composers study at CIM. Audiences are invited to discover the next generation of compositions during studio recitals featuring innovative new works by CIM's award-winning students November 18, March 3, April 21 and April 23.
The season begins with a visit by one of today's most successful young composers, Sean Shepherd, in Symposium on November 10 discussing his music and approach to composition. Mr. Shepherd will be a guest with the New Music Ensemble on November 11, in a program featuring his works, and works by Fitch and Fox.
December 5, an all-star lineup of CIM faculty and guest artists presents a program of music by CIM's own composition faculty. Performers include Marla Berg (soprano), Dean Southern (baritone), Scott Dixon (double bass), Yolanda Kondonassis (harp), Jason Vieaux (guitar), Linda Jones (piano) and more.
Guest conductor Michael Adelson of the New York Philharmonic joins the CIM Orchestra and baritone Dean Southern in a celebration of the centenary of the birth of Witold Lutosławski.
The season concludes April 6 and 7 with Pulitzer Prizewinning Shulamit Ran in Symposium (April 6). Her works will be performed by the New Music Ensemble April 7.
Experience the fusion of new music and modern art during the fourth year of CIM's collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA) in its brand new University Circle location during Harmonic Hues. November 15, the New Music Ensemble will present selections from a November 11 event (at CIM), celebrating the works of Sean Shepherd and others. MUSEUM HOSTS MUSIC IN THE GALLERIES - CIM@CMA
Galleries at the Cleveland Museum of Art come alive with chamber music in the second season of this new series. The free first-Wednesday of the month evening concerts, featuring students from CIM and the Case Western Reserve University early music program, is devoted to highlighting the wealth of classical music talent in and around University Circle.
The performances are casual in format, only fifty minutes long. Musicians interact with audiences, describing the works to be performed.
Audiences can whet their musical appetites at 6 p.m. CMA and after, head over to CIM for full length performances at 8 p.m. Visit cim.edu for information on 8 p.m. concerts.
