About the Felderkrais Method
The Feldenkrais Method® of movement and learning develops your capacities for self-improvement. At one level it provides a richer vocabulary of movement. It also develops abilities to direct and to broaden attention to the domains of physical sensation. Instead of teaching "correct" movements we will explore how to experiment with variation and refinement of any action you undertake. A clearer internal sense of how you organize yourself for action supports reduction of unnecessary and inefficient effort. This leads gradually, and more and more, to less pain or fatigue and to more comfort and effectiveness.
Each class will be organized around verbally guided Awareness Through Movement® lessons (ATM), which may involve lying or sitting on the floor, sitting on a chair or standing. Please bring something you will be comfortable lying upon, plus a bath towel that can be rolled or folded, and wear clothes that do not restrict full movements. This work is designed and done to allow participation by everyone, taking time to identify all necessary individual variations in movement or position. It turns out that each of these is useful for everyone.
We will have time for questions and discussion before, during, and after the lesson. We are especially interested in conversation about how to integrate our work with musicians' practice time.
About the instructors
Russ Hall has live in Cleveland Heights since 1977 and practiced physical therapy from 1977 to 2012. He has been a certified Feldenkrais practitioner since 2001, completing the transition to a fully Feldenkrais practice in 2012. His first contact with the Feldenkrais Method® was a public workshop by Moshe Feldenkrais in late 1981. Eventually, this led to the four-year training, co-directed by Paul and Julie Casson Rubin, 1976 graduates of the first American training. He has always worked with people of many different backgrounds, conditions, interests and needs.
Samantha Basford Damoulakis, founder of Cleveland Movement LLC, is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner® (2011) with 17 years of experience in movement studies as a professional ballet dancer and teacher. Engaging in Feldenkrais began abruptly when needing to address a serious back injury. However, as a fantastic by-product of her learning, Samantha realized Feldenkrais decreased her pain and improved her technique, artistry and coordination. For sharing this learning platform with her students, she maintains a private practice in Shaker Heights and has taught specialized workshops for artists, pregnant moms and anthropologists.
