Career Resources
Today's economy presents new challenges for budding musicians; society will constantly push for the freshest ability with the greatest ingenuity. It's important to know that you have many resources to help you prepare for life after graduation, and although the hard work is just beginning, your diligence now will surely pay off in the long-run.
"Success as a professional musician requires much more than talent and luck! Whether hoping to augment your income, stand out from a competitive field, add variety to activities, or erect an empire, savvy musicians find ways to thrive under any circumstances."
- Dr. David Cutler, "The Savvy Musician"
Here are a few resources to get you started:
- Websites like Indeed (www.indeed.com) or Simply Hired (www.simplyhired.com) compile search results from dozens of major online job databases, discipline-specific sites, job partnerships, and some of their own listings, making them more effective than typical job boards. They also offer additional tools like salary charts, job market demographics and local jobs searches limited by zip code or city names (looking for local, part-time work?).
- LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) is a social-networking site designed specifically for professional networking. "Just for fun" applications are not available; rather, you can utilize it as you would an online résumé. Connections listed on LinkedIn can help you locate job leads or serve as references for you (versus 'casual acquaintances' on other sites). You can also search for jobs through LinkedIn.
Musician-specific resources:
- BRIDGE Worldwide Music Connection (*note: Individual memberships are $55/year. CIM pays for an institutional account that current students may use. Please contact Dean Gilson for the username and password.)
- The Savvy Musician (specifically Jobs link or Organizations link)
- Music Teacher Job Solutions
- TakeLessons.com
Looking for part-time work?
- SnagAJob.com
- CollegeHelpers.com
- Cleveland.com - for local jobs (scroll to the bottom, search: "career channels", "skill", "part-time jobs")
- CIM Work Study positions: inquire at the Financial Aid office
- universitycircle.org - for a list of businesses that may hire local students
