Marshall Griffith

Marshall Griffith received his Bachelor of Music (1975) and Master of Music (1977) degrees in composition from The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), as well as a Doctor of Music (1986) from Indiana University (IU). He studied composition with Eugene O'Brien, Donald Erb and John Eaton, and studied piano with Olga Radosavljevich (CIM) and Wallace Hornibrook (IU).

He was the recipient of The Music Teachers National Association Award in composition in 1976. In 1987 he was the recipient of an Individual Fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council. He has also received awards from The ASCAP Foundation. In 2014 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Cleveland Institute of Music.

His works have been published by Theodore Presser and Belle Press, and recorded on Crystal Records. He served as chairman of the Cleveland Composers Guild from 1991 until 1995. His music has been performed by the Baton Rouge Symphony, the Amici, Bel Arte and Coleridge String Quartets, the 20th Century Consort, Akron New Music Ensemble and the Black Earth Percussion Group. In addition to his compositions he has arranged music for jazz ensembles, various chamber ensembles and solo piano.

Active as a jazz and classical pianist, Dr. Griffith has also been a soloist with the Canton Symphony, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Pops, Suburban Symphony, CIM Orchestra, CIM Woodwind Ensemble, Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony, and the CWRU Jazz Band. He performed in a professional two-piano team, the Fine Arts Duo, from 1980 until 1990. He is a frequent performer for benefit concerts for many organizations throughout Northeast Ohio including The Cleveland Orchestra, The Cleveland International Piano Competition, Playhouse Square Foundation and CIM. In addition, he helped found and perform for Access to the Arts, an organization that presents programs for senior adults. He is also a Resident Artist for the Music and Arts Program at The Cleveland Clinic.

For 2007 and 2008, Dr. Griffith was the pianist for Temple Israel in Akron, Ohio. From 2009-2013, he was the pianist for Temple Emanu El in Orange Village, Ohio. Currently he is the pianist and Director of Music for The Temple Tifereth Israel in Beachwood, Ohio.

He was appointed to the CIM Preparatory Faculty in 1975 and appointed to the CIM Conservatory Faculty in 1982. He teaches all levels of Music Theory courses and courses on Improvisation. At CIM, in addition to his teaching duties, he served as Dean of Student Affairs at CIM from 1994 until 1997. He served as Development Manager, responsible for Alumni Relations and Individual Giving, from 1997 until 2000 and as President of the CIM Alumni Association from 2005 until 2007. He has participated as a chamber music coach for the CIM Chamber Music Festival. He also served on the faculty of Camp Klavier from 1992 until 2000 and was on faculty at the ENCORE School for Strings beginning in 1998 through 2006.

He was on the Allegheny Music Festival faculty in the summer of 2005. In the summer of 2011 he joined the faculty of the Lakeland College Jazz Camp. He has also taught piano and improvisation at The School of Fine Arts in Willoughby, Ohio from 1977-1986. A frequent lecturer he has given many programs on Jazz Improvisation, Classical Improvisation, Drama and Music, Golden Section and Chiastic proportions in music, Writing for Percussion, Writing for the Inside of the Piano, The Solo Works for Violin by J.S. Bach and on Mozart’s Magic Flute.
