Rebecca Schweigert Mayhew
Oboist Rebecca Schweigert Mayhew’s playing has been described as “stellar” and “excellent” by the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Principal Oboe of CityMusic Cleveland, she is one of the organization’s founding musicians and was also its first Director of Education, responsible for creating CityMusic’s El Sistema-inspired youth orchestra in Slavic Village. She has previously held principal positions in the New World Symphony, where she toured and recorded under the direction of music director Michael Tilson Thomas, and in the Hartford Symphony. Summer festivals have included, most notably, two years at Tanglewood, where she was principal oboe for the historic fiftieth anniversary production of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes under the baton of maestro Seiji Ozawa, and concerto soloist during the noted
contemporary music festival; and the Kent-Blossom Music Festival, where she studied with legendary Cleveland Orchestra principal oboist John Mack.
Ms. Mayhew is also on the faculty of Cleveland State University where she served as principal oboe of the Cleveland Chamber Winds, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of rarely heard wind chamber music. Locally she has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as all of the regional orchestras. A native of northern Michigan, she received her schooling at Oberlin
College Conservatory of Music (BM, BA with Honors), as a student of James Caldwell, and at Rice University (MM), as a student of Houston Symphony principal oboist Robert Atherholt.
