Violinist Shannon Thomas is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Paul Kantor. A Tennessee native, she earned her Bachelor of Music (Magna cum laude) from Vanderbilt University -- Blair School of Music, where she studied with Cornelia Heard. After completing her Master of Music at Yale University under the tutelage of Ani Kavafian, Ms. Thomas joined the Herberger String Quartet, the graduate string quartet in residence at Arizona State University, where she also served as a teaching assistant to Jonathan Swartz.
An active performer, Ms. Thomas has appeared around the United States as a chamber musician, soloist, and in recital. She has been a soloist with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, Chattanooga Youth Symphony Orchestra, Vanderbilt University Orchestra, and Sewanee Festival Orchestra. As a chamber musician, Ms. Thomas has had the honor to study with artists such as Joseph Silverstein, Laurie Smukler, Seymour Lipkin, and members of the Juilliard, Blair, Cavani, and Brentano String Quartets. She has attended summer festivals including Kneisel Hall, ENCORE School for Strings, Sarasota Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival. While at the Sarasota Music Festival, she was selected to perform Brahms’ G Major Sonata for Piano and Violin for the highly esteemed Ida Haendel.
Interested in teaching and sharing her enthusiasm for the arts, Ms. Thomas has taught and given master classes around the country. She has instructed pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate students at various institutions, including Vanderbilt University, Yale University, Arizona State University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Herberger College for Kids, Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.
