Audio Division

CIM offers a four-year program of study in audio recording that is intended for a musician who wants to pursue a career as a recording engineer. Students majoring solely in audio recording, while being musicians, are not required to develop performance skills to the level of performance majors; however, the music theory curriculum is the same as that for CIM performance majors, with the aim of cultivating the aural acuity and musical knowledge necessary for the profession. Courses emphasize hands-on work in recording, editing, electronic music, acoustics, and mixing techniques in multiple musical styles. As an Avid Learning Partner, CIM recording majors receive intensive training and certification in the Pro Tools music production software, which has been an industry standard for music production and music for video for many years. Other requirements include independent recording projects and an internship in a professional music production facility. Sufficient studio time is guaranteed for the completion of all class assignments and individual projects in the CIM recording facilities. Students in the program also have additional opportunities to practice their recording skills through required participation in the CIM Recording Services. Recording majors are trained to record the recitals and ensembles of their fellow students. A position that requires attention to detail, working within deadlines, high quality work, and the responsibility that comes with a real world job.

The skills and experience gained in the audio program are invaluable, not only for the aspiring recording engineer, but also for the increasing number of professional musicians who choose to pursue careers closely allied with or dependent upon electronic media. Undergraduate students majoring in performance, composition, and eurhythmics, may also add studies leading to a double major in audio recording. Normally requiring five years of study, this undergraduate program provides a concentrated, skills-oriented approach to training for professional audio careers. The double-major structure allows extensive work in audio courses without weakening the performance program.
