Welcome to the website of the Cleveland Institute of Music. This website seems to have captured the sense of joy in music that radiates from our school and I hope that, as you enter, you will use your imagination to get a true feeling for what makes our school such a special place to master the art of musical expression.
Cleveland is a relatively small city with a history of big culture and how wonderful that is. And, similarly, we are a relatively small independent conservatory with a world-class faculty in all departments. Indeed, a school's faculty is its true educational resource. We are proud of our close relations with The Cleveland Orchestra - more than half of the members of The Cleveland Orchestra (including ALL of the principals) are connected to CIM as faculty members, alumni, or both.
Located in University Circle, rated one of the most attractive and culturally rich square miles in the world by Forbes magazine, we have at arm's distance the campus of Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the renowned Cleveland Clinic, Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland's Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Botanical Garden and the Cleveland Institute of Art.
Our Mission and Vision:
To be the center for the education of the complete musician of the 21st Century
The mission of the Cleveland Institute of Music is to cultivate new generations of young musicians through an immersive and creative educational process, guiding the most musically talented individuals as rapidly as possible towards fulfilling careers that engage diverse and global audiences, stimulating the understanding and love of music throughout the world.
Since its founding in 1920, CIM has offered a world-class education to students from age 3 to 93. Located in University Circle, Cleveland's cultural hub, CIM is easily accessible to all music lovers - providing hundreds of concerts annually, most free of charge. CIM graduates play important musical roles in our world as composers producing meaningful new repertoire, as eminent instrumental and vocal soloists, as world-renowned chamber musicians and as members of premier orchestras around the globe. More than half of the members of The Cleveland Orchestra are connected to CIM as members of the faculty, alumni or both.
CIM is an educational and performance resource for the community, working in close association with The Cleveland Orchestra, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland School of the Arts, University Circle Inc. and other cultural and educational organizations towards increased access to great music, great musical performance and the highest level of music pedagogy.
Degree programs at CIM attract a geographically and culturally diverse student body with approximately 25% international students, 15% from Ohio and 60% from the remaining areas of the U.S. All CIM students participate in the rich curriculum of the joint music program with Case Western Reserve University while benefiting from access to CIM's world-renowned visiting artists and conductors, and from intensive study with CIM's stellar faculty.
