Mary Davis

Musicology, Chair, CWRU, was the first person to be appointed to the University's Robson Junior Professorship, which she held until her promotion to associate professor in 2005. She is now associate director of CWRU's Baker Nord Center for the Humanities and serves as university liaison and advisor to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. In 2007, she was the Howard D. Rothschild Fellow in Dance at Harvard University's Houghton Library. Dr. Davis specializes in the cultural criticism of music, and her research focuses on the relationship of music to fashion. Her book Classic Chic: Music, Fashion, and Modernism, published in 2006 by the University of California Press, was short-listed for the Costume Society of America's Millia Davenport Publication Award and has been cited by The Atlantan magazine as "an intriguing study for anyone interested in the conncetions between early twentieth-century music and fashion." She is also the author of the biography Erik Satie, published in the Critical Lives series at London-based Reaktion Books, and is editor of the forthcoming volume Waiting for a Train: Jimmie Rodgers's America, issued by Rounder Books in late 2007. Her essay "Refashioning the Fashion Plate: Poiret in Context" appears in Poiret, the catalog issued in conjunction with the recent Poiret exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A recent interview about these projects was included in the November issue of Ar'te-fakt magazine. Recent articles include "Chanel, Stravinsky, and Musical Chic," in the journal Fashion Theory and a review of the book The Composer as Intellectual: Music and Ideology in France, 1914-1940, by Jane Fulcher, in the December 2006 issue of Notes. Recent presentations include the delivery of the paper "Stravinsky in Vogue: Rethinking Neoclassicism," at the Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society in 2006, as well as talks at Boston University and The Ohio State University. Previous presentations include talks in a variety of national and international settings, including conferences of the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music and the International Musicological Society and symposia at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study and the Fondation des Etats-Unis in Paris. As an advisor to the Rock Hall, Dr. Davis oversees CWRU/Rock Hall collaborations including the annual American Music Masters series, which honors a pioneering figure in American popular music and culminates in a day-long conference on the CWRU campus and a major tribute concert. The program's 2007 honoree was Jerry Lee Lewis. Dr. Davis teaches courses on topics including modernism, twentieth-century music, world music and American popular music. A pianist by training, she coordinates the music department's keyboard programs. Outside the music department, she has held the position of professor of management policy at the Weatherhead School of Management. In 1999 she received the University's Mortar Board Top Prof Award, in 2003 she was awarded a Glennan Teaching Fellowship and in 2005 she was nominated for the University's Carl F. Wittke Undergraduate Teaching Prize. Dr. Davis holds degrees from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame (B.M.), the Peabody Conservatory of Music (M.M., piano), the New England Conservatory of Music (M.M., musicology) and Harvard University (Ph.D., musicology). Prior to her appointment at CWRU, she taught at the University of South Carolina and was a teaching fellow at Harvard University. Through the 1980s, she worked as a tax lobbyist in Washington, DC. She was appointed to the CWRU faculty in 1998.
